Tracking the ‘Jena’ Story Online: Voices of Unity, Love & Racism
Jena, Louisiana has never seen so many people. Buses seemingly lined up for miles; media – print, broadcast, photo, video, online, bloggers – from around the world.
* The Jena Times website has taken a very straight ahead approach: Here’s what’s happening? And here’s the timeline.
* The New Orleans Times Picayune features real-time photo essays and a blog.
* The Dallas Morning News slide show has some wonderfully powerful images.
* The London Times (UK) has incorporated a photo slide show and a link to a related story: “Nooses in a tree raises spectre of the Old South’.
* The Alexandria Town Talk is covering the story, but the real story is in the posted comments:
** “It looks like the march is just another reason for blacks to take a day of from work. All we have heard for years is that you have been mistreated and that you do not have the same rights. We we treat you as equals and give you the same rights you still complain. Yes, the white boys did wrong by putting nooses in the tree, but not give the black boys the right to beat them up. Why do you think everything has to be settled with violence. If you want the respect and want to be treated as equals, ACT LIKE IT!!!As far as the punishment for the “SIX LITTLE ANGELS” they are getting what they deserve for taking the law into their own hands. “IF YOU DO THE CRIME, BE PREPAIRED TO DO THE TIME”. By the way, who is Al Sharpton?” – CletisÂ
** “LYNCHING was terrorism. Think about minding your own business and men barging into your house and taking your father and hanging him in front of you with the police either helping or turning a blind eye. That’s why the hanging of the nooses was so vile and whoever did that should of been expelled. As for the fighting it was wrong, 100% but should teenagers who got in a school fight even if it was 6 on 1 be charged with attempted murder…no.” LSU Grad
** “I feel sorry for the folks in Jena and as usual it seems the media has once more caused a circus. I feel that Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the rest of their ilk should just quietly slink away and stay out of local affairs. They don’t help, they just cause hatred to flow and emotions to run high. I don’t hate anyone, but I sure do get annoyed at their behavior and particularly when it shows an abundance of ignorance. We here in Louisiana have a horrible national image and it is time to change it. ” – Sweetie Pie
