“Where will I find a job?” the student asked.

Tom Joyner Old SchoolJust yesterday, a student came by my office, and asked a very simple question, “So, Professor Foote, where am I supposed to get a job? Everybody is filing for bankruptcy?” He couldn’t have asked a more pertinent question. My answer: There are jobs, but you’re going to have to dig that much harder and be willing to work in places in may have never considered before or for media you may have never considered ‘media’.

Just as finished my sentence, the student followed up to say that he did have an offer to work in Kodiak, Alaska – and he was seriously considering it. He knew the terrain rom having spent time in Anchorage earlier in his life. Was that his first choice? Hardly. Was he considering it as a serious option. Yes, with hopes that he’d find something within the continental 48 states. In fact, he was on hist way to talk to a publisher who is running a completely internet-based local website –

Is this one of the most anxious times I’ve ever seen in the media business? Probably, but at every point of economic downturn, the media are quick to rebound: Cut here, cut there and just wait it out. What’s different now is that newspapers and television stations need to look at their CEO counterparts at the Big Three automakers and look in the mirror. Traditional media – like the auto industry – has to make fundamental changes in the way they do business. For media, its becoming more agile, responsive and dynamic – almost going back to the old heydays of the wire services when news was reported and distributed as soon as it happened.

For job seekers, watching this play out before their eyes, remain vigilant, and committed to this business. If you have any doubts, then reconsider your profession. If you’re a passionate believer that someone needs to have the skills to report, writer and distribute information from credible professionals – not just someone with an opinion – then there are media jobs available. And you’re the right person for the job.
